Merchant Navy Memorial Service

June 1 @ 11:00 am

To commemorate the loss of life by members of the Merchant Navy during times of war, a memorial service will be held at the Merchant Navy Memorial, on the Newcastle Harbour foreshore, opposite the old Newcastle Rail Station. This service will be held at 11.00 hrs on Saturday June 1st, and is open to all those who appreciate the work of the men and women of the Merchant Navy during war, and also in times of peace.

In the event of rain, the service will be held at the Missions to Seafarers, Hannell St Wickham.

A reminder of the sacrifices made by sea farers in times of war came these last  few weeks with the discovery of the SS ”Iron Crown” laying in some 100 fathoms of water off the coast of Victoria, after having been sunk by a Japanese submarine. The vessel was torpedoed on June 4th, 1941, sinking within 60 seconds with the loss of 38 of its 43 crew members.
