From Humble Beginnings
A Vision Born in Faith
Rhema Newcastle’s journey began with a simple but powerful question in 1984: an ad in the Newcastle Herald asking if anyone was interested in starting a Christian radio station. Little did Russell and Betty Aitcheson know that this enquiry would spark a journey of faith, persistence and divine provision. In 1985, they travelled to Christchurch, bringing back the vision for Rhema FM Newcastle, even though they had no idea how to get a radio station up and running.
Starting from humble beginnings, with just a small group of Christians and limited resources, Rhema FM embarked on its mission to be a beacon of light in the Hunter region. The road was not easy; temporary broadcasts were the reality for many years, with 31 test broadcasts between 1987 and 1999. Despite the challenges and setbacks, they held onto their faith, encouraged by the words of Habakkuk 2:3: “For the vision is yet for the appointed time; it hastens toward the goal, and it will not fail. Though it tarries, wait for it; for it will certainly come, it will not delay.”
A Miraculous Breakthrough
The breakthrough came in June 1999 during a “Memberthon” event. What seemed impossible happened: Rhema FM’s membership soared from 2,100 to over 5,100 financial supporters in just seven days, a feat no other community radio station had achieved in Australia. This surge in support, combined with the relentless prayer and dedication of the Rhema team, led to a life-changing moment.
In December 1999, after years of persistence and thousands of letters to the Australian Broadcasting Authority (ABA), Rhema FM was granted full-time community radio licensing.
Where We Are Today
Now, as we step into our 40th year, Rhema continues its mission of sharing life-giving content in the Hunter region. Broadcasting full-time for over 20 years, we’re a beacon of hope, sharing the message of Jesus Christ through music and community outreach. Funded by our faithful supporters and business sponsors, God continues to provide for our needs through our annual Rhemathon event.
